Overview
The File Editor opens a text file on the agent, lets you change it, and saves it back - keeping the file's owner and permissions as they were.
To open it, right-click a file in the agent half of the File Manager and select Edit.
Requirements
ProfessionalThe File Editor requires a professional subscription.
What can be edited
- Text files only - the file must be valid UTF-8
- Files up to 8 MB
- Not the agent's own configuration files, which are signed and cannot be changed this way. The one exception is unique.ini
Toolbar
| Save | Write your changes back to the agent |
| Backup | Copy the file on the agent to <name>.bak, as it is on disk now. If a backup already exists you are asked whether to replace it |
| Close, Cancel, Reload | One button, three jobs: Close ends the session when nothing has changed, Cancel discards your changes and reloads the file, and Reload opens the file again once it has been closed |
Closing the editor, or cancelling, with unsaved changes asks you to confirm before they are discarded.
Files you don't own
Without elevation you can only change files the account you are working as owns. When a file can be read but not written, you are offered Elevate to open it with administrator or root privileges. If you decline, or your profile does not allow elevation, the file opens read only. See Privilege Elevation.
If the file changes while you edit
If something else changes the file after you opened it, your save is refused rather than overwriting the other change. You can then reload the file, discarding your edits, or keep editing and copy your changes out first.
If the connection to the file is lost, your changes stay in the editor - Save reopens the file and tries again.
